The One That Almost Got Away
The alarm went off at dawn, but I was already awake. Through the window, the light fog promised good conditions. Today was the day I had been waiting for all week.
I grabbed my gear and headed out quietly. The lake was calm, almost like glass. No wind, no boats, just me and the water. Perfect conditions for kayak fishing adventure.
Quiet lake
First cast with my Squid Jigs landed right where I wanted it. Nothing. Second cast. Nothing. Third. Still nothing. Two hours passed, and my confidence started fading.
The sun was higher now, and I could feel the heat on my neck. Maybe I picked the wrong spot. Maybe the fish just weren't here today.
Then I saw it. A subtle movement in the weeds about twenty feet to my right. Not wind. Not current. Fish.
I adjusted my position and made a careful cast. The line settled. I waited. Three seconds. Five. Then my rod bent hard.
The fight lasted maybe ten minutes, but it felt like an hour. When I finally got the bass into my net, my hands were shaking. Not my biggest catch, but definitely my most memorable one this season.
Back at the dock, I thought about how many times I almost gave up today. That's what fishing teaches you, I guess. The best moments come right after you think it's over.
