When Dawn Broke the Surface
The truck seat felt like an ice cube against my back as I rolled into the boat ramp parking lot. Headlights cut through pre-dawn mist, revealing mayflies dancing above the water's surface. I patted the worn soft plastics in my tackle box - my grandfather's last Christmas gift still riding in compartment three.
'Should've brought the thermos,' I muttered, watching breath fog dissipate in the 45°F air. The lake exhaled cold vapor as my kayak sliced through lily pads. First cast landed perfectly between two cypress knees. Nothing. Tenth cast snagged moss. Twentieth created concentric rings that mocked my persistence.
Sunrise painted the sky tangerine when it happened - three quick tugs followed by dead weight. Heart pounding, I engaged the spinning reel only to reel in...a waterlogged branch. Laughter echoed across the lake until the next cast.
This time the line sang. Drag screamed as something massive bulldozed through submerged timber. Rod tip kissed the water, then sprang up as the smallmouth breached - sunlight glinting off bronze scales. Eighteen inches of pure muscle tail-walked across the mirrored surface.
As I released the fish, dawn's first rays warmed my numb fingers. The lake whispered secrets to those willing to outwait the sunrise.
